For this paper, you will choose a film from the list below and explore in A MINIMUM of 500-700 words how the Communication principle you have chosen is illustrated. Use the following as a guideline.

In the first paragraph – introduce and briefly summarize the action of the film. You should conclude your introduction with a thesis that clearly identifies the principle you will be examining and how that principle functions in the film. Remember, too, that your thesis (and following, the body of your paper) should clearly “prove” something, not just give examples of the aspect of communication you have chosen. If, for example, you decide to address Interpersonal Communication in a film like Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, you might decide to examine how the friendships of Hermione and Ron influence Harry’s development as a wizard, rather than simply offer examples of their friendships.

Remember that your goal in this paper is NOT to summarize the movie. Your introduction should provide a basic overview, with the following paragraphs offering sufficient detail for the audience to understand the points you are making – which should not simply be a list of scenes that illustrate the communication principle your are examining. Also eliminate any references to the actors, since the paper is not a movie review.

The films on the list are chosen to illustrate specific communication concepts, but each contains ample evidence of many principles. Your focus, however, should be limited to your chosen concept. For example, Twelve Angry Men could be analyzed for several elements, including critical thinking, intercultural communication, development of the self, and small group dynamics, but your analysis of that film (if it were on the list) would examine only one of those elements.

Remember to provide in your analysis clear examples and applications – ideas supported fully from the film.

The analysis in this paper should be yours and not gathered from outside sources, but if you include information about the ideas you are examining that you gather from sources beyond the text, be sure to include appropriate references. You can assume text content is “common knowledge” for our purposes, unless you are providing direct quotes or very specific ideas.

An additional of tip: Remember that this paper should be about your chosen film, not about you, so keep “i” and “me” out of the paper. Do not include observations about why you find your film personally interesting or meaningful.

Before you submit your paper, be sure to proofread carefully. Pay attention, especially, to what has become a very common error – shifting verb tense. Do not shift back and forth between the past and present tenses. Essays about the arts are generally written in the present tense, but the most important thing is to maintain the tense in which you begin.

Submit your paper – in correct APA format – via Canvas. Errors in APA format will result in point deductions.

Ten percent of your grade will be assigned based upon evidence that you have visited the Writing Center with a DRAFT of your paper.
