In the struggle to combat obesity in the United States, particularly among African American women, there are several organizations with resources to address this epidemic. The following five promote different topics, but all of them provide resources that can assist African American women who are battling the disease. The Black Women’s Health Imperative, National Alliance on Mental Health, Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, National Wellness Institute and American Public Health Association. I will discuss the missions of the following two: National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) and The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

NAMI is dedicated to building better lives for millions of Americans affected by mental illness by raising awareness, providing support and education that was not previously available to those in need. As I develop an action plan to break down the mental barrier of depression to engage and motivate patients struggling with obesity, NAMI’s Sharing Hope Program, provider education courses and specific data on mental illness issues in the African American community will be vital to its success.

As the world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is committed to improving health and advancing the profession of dietetics through research, education and advocacy. The key to long term weight loss is a healthy diet and my action plan will incorporate strategies to provide access to healthy food, recipes and information to change eating habits. Our goals are in line to empower and optimize health through food and nutrition.
